Moments of being brings together five contemporary artists working across various mediums, all tackling universal themes of existence. The curator assembled a powerful collection that delves into the complexities of otherness, health, gender identity, intimacy, and longing. The artists don’t shy away from difficult topics. One particularly striking piece is “Your Weight or Mine” by Clinton Hayden, is a work about love and loss that features two rope nooses.
The exhibition was inspired as I was strolling down Peel Street in Collingwood, a splash of color on a street pole grabbed my eye. Not just any graffiti – it was a graphic of a person on a public street pole ‘QUEER FEMME’. This fantastic piece became part of a larger exhibition showcasing the works of multiple queer artists. The transition from gritty street art to a curated gallery space felt like a victory in itself.
